I have one in daily use that I made 50 years ago. Next one do as above leave the spikes long enough to go right through and not normally needed but you can glue them in if you wish. Done that way the back screws will rust in and the whole thing will be over in about 3 or 4 years with bits breaking off. Oh oh ,I see you didn't rust kill them and didn't prime them so polyurethane or not they won't last long. Did you rust kill and prime the spikes before painting ? Are they also painted where they are in contact with the wood? Wood usually sits at about 12% moisture content plus or minus for where you live so the spikes rust inside if you don't. You will be amazed how they keep the edge. Start the knives with used industrial hacksaw blades and grind very slowly. I have a problem though with your mention of using soft steel forged spikes for knives. I used the router on the edges.I didn't want him to mess that up on such a nice piece of wood. For this weeks Hook of the Week I thought I would make some hooks from rail spikes. When mounted, just push the plugs back in the holes and you'll have a real solid mount that can hold some weight. Railroad spike are favorite material for many beginning blacksmiths. We drilled about halfway through each corner with a 1/4 forstner bit and the rest of the way with a small wood bit. I set him in front of the board and said."make these other three holes look like this" For wall mounting the rack, we came up with the idea of using these square walnut plugs I had. I then drilled the center hole with a 1/4 wood bit. Once we had them laid out, I used a 3/4 in forstner bit to countersink a hole in the back to make the mounting bolt flush to the rear of the rack. It's a simple and easy way not to mess up. One trick I taught him was, you can always use measurements and math or you can pick something from the shop that's just about right and use it as a template. Once all the spikes were tapped, I laid them out on the wood and taught him how to mark center and ensure the hooks are equally separated.
